Harvard University remained as the No. 1 university in the world according to the annual Academic Ranking of World Universities 2013, followed by Stanford University in 2nd place globally.

UC Berkeley moved up to 3rd place overall behind Harvard and Stanford in the 2013 global rankings of universities, and is again the top-ranked public university, followed by UCLA (12th), UCSD (14th) and UCSF (18th).

In Australia, the highest ranked university is the University of Melbourne (No. 1 in the country and No. 54 in the world), ahead of Australian National University (No. 2 in the country and No. 66 in the world). Monash University has achieved its highest ever ranking in the ARWU University Rankings 2013. It remains in the 101-150 band with an estimated ranking of 134, representing an improvement of three places since 2012.
