I attended Berklee College of Music and I will agree with you in that it was pretty "weedy" as you so eloquently put it. They instruct their own "method" of teaching music, which basically says that music began with the chord. In which case it did not. It all began with a voice and so counterpoint was the beginning. I especially noticed this after having compared my studies with my cousin who attended Manhattan School of Music and later went on to Harvard and completed a PhD.

However, I will disagree with you in that Berklee is "out classed" by Musician's Institute. I glanced at their theory books and I will say that Berklee is better than MI. But by a wide margin, not even including the faculty at Berklee which is way superior to that of MI.
