Rated 48th in the world, LMU is regarded as one of the most renowned universities on the European continent – after the ETH Zürich, which is ranked 24th overall.

The University of Göttingen (Georg-August-Universität Göttingen) is also ranked among the world's best universities in the QS World University Rankings 2011, with an overall rank of 149th globally. Additionally it is ranked highly in the following subjects: Natural Sciences (84th), Life Sciences (103rd), Arts & Humanities (119th), Social Sciences (277th).

In another international league table "Ranking Web of World universities", Freie Universität Berlin is ranked 1st in Germany and 92nd in the world (July 2011), followed by Ludwig Maximilians Universität München (95th), and Humboldt Universität zu Berlin (103rd).
