Following are the top leading universities in Sri Lanka:

University of Colombo
- It is the oldest University in Sri Lanka. The University of Colombo is a National State University that offers education to some of the best students in the country.
- Ranked among the world's top universities in the THE-QS World University Rankings™. It was ranked 547th in 2007 and among the top 600 globally in 2008.

University of Moratuwa
- It is the only Technological University in Sri Lanka, located at the heart of a beautiful, vibrant and geographically well-connected city.
- UoM was ranked as the No. 1 University in the World for FOSS development at the annual GSoC competitions held from its inception in 2005 to 2009. It was the No. 1 University at the 2007, 2008 and 2009 annual competitions.

University of Peradeniya
- The University of Peradeniya is the heir to the oldest university tradition in Sri Lanka as the successor to the University of Ceylon, the first institution of its kind in the country.
- The University is rated 3rd in the country according to the Webometrics Ranking of Top Colleges and Best Universities of Sri Lanka (July 2010).

University of Kelaniya
- It was one of the first Universities to begin teaching science in sinhala, and also the first to restructure the traditional Arts Faculty into three separate Faculties of Humanities, Social Sciences and Commerce and Management.
