Adelphi University was the first institution of higher education for the liberal arts on Long Island. It is the first university in the metropolitan New York area to offer an M.S. in physics with a concentration in optics.

Adelphi University is chartered by the University of the State of New York, and is accredited by: the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools; the New York State Education Department; the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education; the American Psychological Association; the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association; the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE); the Council on Social Work Education; AACSB International (The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business).
