Canadian universities are ranked highly in the Times Higher Education (THE) rankings 2010-2011. The University of Toronto is the highest ranked institution in the country and one of only three Canadian institutions in the world's top 50. It is rated 17th globally (up from 29th in 2009) and ahead of University of British Columbia (30th) and McGill University (35th).

According to the seventh annual THE World University Rankings, Harvard University is rated as the No. 1 university in the world. The rankings measure the institutional excellence of the world's top 200 universities in research, teaching and knowledge transfer.

McMaster University is ranked 4th in Canada and 93rd in the world. University of Alberta came in at 127th and followed closely by University of Victoria (130th internationally).

A total of nine Canadian universities made it into the global top 200. University of Montreal is rated 7th in the country and 138th in the world, Dalhousie University is at 193rd, while Simon Fraser University in B.C. is tied for 199th with Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.

In another world university rankings released by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) in 2010, McGill University is ranked as the best university in Canada (19th globally) and ahead of University of Toronto (29th globally).
