According to the 2006 Performance Based Research Fund (PBRF) exercise, The University of Otago is New Zealand's top ranked university for research quality.
It is ranked Number One in the top eight quality rankings as released by Tertiary Education Commission (TEC), followed by University of Auckland (#2), Canterbury (#3), Victoria University of Wellington (#4), Waikato (#5), Massey (#6), Lincoln (#7) and Auckland University of Technology (#8).

Founded in 1883, The University of Auckland has eight faculties on six campuses. It is the highest ranked university in the nation. It is the only New Zealand institution featured in the World's top 50 ranking.

The University of Waikato has achieved a significant improvement in research performance with the release of the Tertiary Education Commission's 2006 Performance-Based Research Fund Results. It achieved number one ranking in ten subject areas, compared with five in 2003. University of Waikato's School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences has been reconfirmed as the No. 1 school in its area in the country as has Waikato Management School.
