Harvard University was ranked 1st globally according to the prestigious Academic Ranking of World Universities 2017, followed by Stanford University in 2nd place and the University of Cambridge in 3rd place.

In Australia, the highest ranked institution is the University of Melbourne (ranked 39th in the world. The University of Queensland was ranked 55th globally and second in Australia. In addition, UQ was named in the world’s top ten universities for six subjects (with 18 subjects in the top 50 and 36 in the top 100) and best in Australia in another six, according to the ARWU subject rankings.

Monash University was ranked 78th in the world; up from 79th in 2016. This latest ARWU ranking followed the recent release of the ShanghaiRanking’s 2017 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) in which Monash came 1st nationally in eleven subjects (two tied equal first) and overall had sixteen subjects ranked internationally in the top 50.

In the UK, the University of Cambridge was ranked 1st and ahead of the University of Oxford (2nd in the UK and 7th globally) and University College London (16th globally). A total of 38 UK institutions ranked in the global top 500 including Heriot-Watt University in Scotland, advancing into Top 500 of ARWU for the first time.
