In 2013, four Canadian universities ranked in the Top 100 of the ARWU (Academic Ranking of World Universities) Ranking and 23 in the Top 500; with the University of Toronto rated No. 1 in Canada and No. 28 in the world, followed by the University of British Columbia (ranked No. 2 in Canada and No. 40 in the world).

McGill University was ranked 3rd in Canada and 58th in the world this year, compared with 63rd last year. By discipline, McGill was rated top in Canada in Life Sciences, ranking 23rd in the world. It was also placed second in medicine, with a world ranking of 32nd.

McMaster University continues to be rated among the world's top universities. It was placed 4th in the country and 92nd in the world by ARWU, ahead of the University of Montreal and University of Alberta (both tied for 5th position in Canada and ranked in the range 101-150th globally).

The University of Waterloo was placed 7th in Canada and within the 151-200 range of ranked institutions in the Academic Ranking of World Universities 2013. It was also placed among the top 50 universities in the world for academic achievement in engineering/technology and computer science for the second year running.
