According to the U.S. News & World Report's National University Rankings for 2013, both Harvard University and Princeton University were tied for the No. 1 spot among the best national universities in the United States, followed by Yale University in 3rd position.

Miami University has improved its overall rank to 89th among all 202 national universities (public and private) in the list. Among top public national universities, Miami was ranked 37th, up two spaces over last year's rank. In addition, Miami again was cited for its "unusually strong commitment to undergraduate teaching". It was ranked 3rd among national universities, behind only Dartmouth and Princeton.

Saint Louis University (SLU) was ranked 92nd out of nearly 281 national universities in the country. U.S. News also gave high marks to the undergraduate programs in entrepreneurship (13th) and international business (18th). Additionally, SLU made the "A+ Schools for B+ Students" and "High School Counselor's Picks" lists.

Stony Brook University was ranked among the top 100 National Universities in America (at 92nd) according to the 2013 edition of U.S. News & World Report survey. It was also ranked 40th in the category of "Top Public Schools among National Universities" which is a category consisting of doctoral granting institutions.

The University of Maine (UMaine) was ranked 83rd of all public universities and 156th overall in U.S. News 2013 edition of Best Colleges. UMaine is considered by U.S. News as Maine's only national university, a selective group of institutions that offer a full range of undergraduate majors, plus master's and Ph.D. programs, and an emphasis on faculty research.
