The annual Academic Ranking of World Universities 2012 has just been released by China's Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Harvard University remained as the No. 1 university in the world for the tenth year, ahead of Stanford, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and University of California, Berkeley. This survey is based on faculty publications and research citations, as well as the number of alumni and faculty who have won Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals.
The University of California, San Diego was ranked as the 15th best university in world and its life sciences program was ranked 9th, according to the 2012 Academic Ranking of World Universities. Other UC San Diego ARWU subject field rankings include: natural sciences and mathematics (20th), engineering (12th), clinical medicine and pharmacy (21st), social science (25th), mathematics (25th), chemistry (13th), computer science (14th) and economics (17th).
In UK, the University of Cambridge was ranked 1st nationally and 5th globally, ahead of University of Oxford (10th globally), University College London (21st globally), Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine (24th globally), and University of Manchester (40th globally). A total of 5 UK institutions ranked in the global top 40.
In Australia, the University of Melbourne was rated as Australia's top University and jumped from number 60 last year to 57th in 2012 and has moved up 35 spots since the rankings began in 2003.
