The top leading universities and institutions in Maharashtra (India) include University of Pune, University of Mumbai, IIT Bombay, North Maharashtra University, Shivaji University, Sant Gadge Baba Amravati University, Solapur University, Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology Nagpur, among others.

The University of Pune is one of the best universities in the country, regularly ranked amongst the top universities in Asia and the world. It is ranked 109th in the Asian University Rankings 2010 by Quacquarelli Symonds. The University is also ranked among the global top 600 institutions in the QS World University Rankings 2010.

The University of Mumbai is one of the top ranked universities in the country. It is ranked among the world's best 500 universities in the 2010 QS World University Rankings.

Solapur University was inaugurated on 3-8-2004 by the Governor of Maharashtra. The University is a hub of various academic activities. It offers a range of degree programs such as the Bachelor of Arts & Social Science (B.A.), Master of Arts & Social Science (M.A.), Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com.), B.B.A., Master of Commerce (M.Com.), Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Architecture, and more.

Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur (VNIT) is one of the twenty National Institutes of Technology in the Country. It was founded in 1960 as a joint venture of Government of India and Government of Maharashtra.
