Bethel University is one of the most comprehensive, interdenominational Christian universities in the United States. The University has a number of schools including the College of Arts & Sciences, College of Adult & Professional Studies, Graduate School, and Bethel Seminary.

Bethel University is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. It is also accredited by the Teacher Education Accreditation Council, the Council on Social Work Education (at the undergraduate level), the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education Programs (CAATE) (at the undergraduate level for the Athletic Training Education Program), and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (at the undergraduate and master's levels).

The nursing program is approved by the Minnesota Board of Nursing. The Department of Chemistry is approved by the American Chemical Society, and programs in the department are certified. The undergraduate teacher preparation programs leading to licensure for pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, elementary, and secondary teaching, as well as graduate programs leading to licensure in special education and middle school teaching, are approved by the Minnesota Board of Teaching.

Bethel Seminary is among 8 seminaries chosen for student scholarships by the Kern Foundation, founded to prepare biblical leaders.
