Mumbai has many top leading universities such as the University of Mumbai, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, SNDT Women's University, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, among others.

The University of Mumbai (formerly known as University of Bombay) is one of the oldest and premier Universities in India. It is one amongst the first three universities in India. The University of Mumbai is ranked among the world's top 500 universities in the QS World University Rankings 2010. It is also ranked in the global top 350 for Social Sciences and top 400 for Natural Sciences.

The Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IITB) is recognised as one of the centres of academic excellence in the country. It is ranked 187th among the world's best institutions and in the world's top 50 for Engineering & IT (47th), according to the QS World University Rankings 2010. IIT Bombay has one of the best computer facilities in the country.

Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Women's University (SNDT) has become a symbol of excellence in higher educational opportunities for women. It is the first university in Maharashtra to obtain a Five Star (*****) rating from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) of India.

Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) is recognised by the World Health Organisation as a collaborating Centre for Health, Policy Research and Training. It was awarded a 5-Star rating by NAAC in 2002 and an A grade by NAAC in November 2009, indicating a 'High Level' of academic accomplishment. The TISS has established collaboration for joint research, exchange of faculty and students, and publication with world-class institutions in the United States, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
