Utrecht University is the top rated university in the Netherlands, ranked 1st in the Netherlands and 68th in the world, according to the Times Higher Education 2011-2012 world university rankings. A total of 12 universities from Netherlands ranked in the global top 200. Wageningen University and Research Center is ranked 2nd in the Netherlands and 75th in the world, followed by Leiden University (79th globally).

In another international league table "QS World University Rankings 2011/12", University of Amsterdam is the highest rated university in the Netherlands (63rd internationally), ahead of Utrecht University (tied for 80th with Nagoya University), and Leiden University (88th).

Utrecht University is also ranked highly in other world university rankings. It is ranked 48th in the list of the best research universities in the world, according to the prestigious annual 'Academic Ranking of World Universities' (ARWU) compiled by the University of Shanghai. Since the ARWU ranking began in 2003, Utrecht University has had the highest ranking of all Dutch universities. The University scores particularly well on the citation indices and in terms of the number of Nature and Science publications.
