École Normale Supérieure is the top rated institution in France, ranked 1st in France and 59th in the world, according to the Times Higher Education 2011-2012 world university rankings. A total of 8 French institutions ranked in the global top 400. École Polytechnique is ranked 2nd in France and 63rd in the world, followed by Université Pierre et Marie Curie (84th).

In another international league table "QS World University Rankings 2011/12", École Normale Supérieure is the highest ranked French institution (33rd internationally), followed by École Polytechnique (36th internationally), and Université Pierre et Marie Curie (UPMC) (119th internationally). The QS ranking combines the assessment of a number of factors such as scientific research, quality of education, employability of students and the international dimension of the institutions.

In the survey of employers regarding school reputations, École Polytechnique is placed 15th in the world. This brings recognition to the quality of education provided to the students in its Ingenieur Polytechnicien, Master's and Doctoral programs, as well as its reputation among businesses internationally.

Pierre and Marie Curie University (UPMC) is the leading French scientific and medical university and member of Sorbonne University. In addition to the QS rankings, UPMC is ranked 41st globally in the Academic Ranking of World Universities 2011.
