The University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez (Universidad de Puerto Rico Mayaguez) is the top ranked university in Puerto Rico (rated 723rd in the world), followed by Universidad de Puerto Rico in 2nd place and Universidad de Puerto Rico Río Piedras in 3rd place, according to the Webometrics ranking of Top Colleges and Best Universities of Puerto Rico (July 2011).

In another league table, 4icu.org university web ranking 2011, Universidad de Puerto Rico, Recinto de Mayaguez is ranked 1st in Puerto Rico, followed by Universidad de Puerto Rico in 2nd place and Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico in 3rd place.

The University of Puerto Rico is a well established institution, consisting of the Mayagüez Campus, the Medical Sciences Campus, and the Río Piedras Campus, which are dedicated to both undergraduate and graduate education; and the Colleges at Aguadilla, Arecibo, Bayamón, Carolina, Cayey, Humacao, Ponce, and Utuado which provide undergraduate education. The Mayagüez Campus of the University of Puerto Rico is fully accredited by the Council of Higher Education of Puerto Rico. It holds membership in the Middle States Commission on Higher Education since 1946. It is also a member of the Association of HispanicAmerican Universities.

The Mayagüez Campus of the University of Puerto Rico is also a member of Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) since 1966.
