University of Washington is ranked 1st in the U.S. News and World Report's ranking of best family nurse practitioner programs. This top-ranked Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) specialty within the Doctor of Nursing Practice program focuses on providing primary care services in the community to clients of all ages. Graduates of the program have assumed leadership roles in practice, education, organizations, research, and policy development. The University of Washington Doctor of Nursing Practice program is fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

University of California--San Francisco is ranked No. 2 for the specialty. It offers a typical two-year course of study leads to the Master of Science degree and certification eligibility as a Family Nurse Practitioner; a part-time study option is also available. UCSF also offers a Post-Master's FNP program; nurses who have already completed a master's degree in nursing may complete a special studies program to obtain an FNP certificate.
