Western Michigan University (US)
- According to the Guide to Geography Programs in the Americas: 2005-2006 (issued by the Association of American Geographers), the Department of Geography is ranked 6th among all institutions in the US in number of thesis-based Masters degrees awarded (and 1st in Michigan). It is also ranked 21st among all institutions in the US in number of Bachelors degrees awarded.
Pennsylvania State University (US)
- Penn State has been ranked as the No. 1 Department of Geography in the United States by the National Research Council (NRC), conducted in 1995.
- US News & World Report ranked Penn State as tied for 16th for Best National Doctoral Universities among public universities in America's Best Colleges 2005.
The University of Sheffield (UK)
- The Department of Geography, founded in 1908, is one of the oldest departments of its kind in the country.
- In the RAE 2008, 95% of its research was rated as 'international standard'. With 70% of research either 'internationally excellent' (50%) or 'world-leading' (20%), this puts the department firmly among the top 10 in the country in research terms.
Durham University (UK)
- In the RAE 2008, the Department of Geography produced the highest volume of world leading (4*), internationally excellent (3*) and overall international quality research of any geography programme in the country.
University of Cambridge (UK)
- The Cambridge University Department of Geography was ranked 1st (jointly with Universities of Bristol, Durham and Oxford) in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. The percentages of research assessed were 30% at 4*, 40% at 3*, 25% at 2* and 5% at 1*.
