Founded in 1743, The University of Delaware (UD) is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in the United States, and consistently ranked among the top tier national universities by US News. It is classified by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as a research university with very high research activity.

The University of Delaware has been continuously accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. It is a member of the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges (NASULGC). The Master in Public Administration program is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration.

- Rated 22nd in the in-state category of Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine's list of the 100 Best Values in Public Colleges, and 18th for out-of-state (2009).

- 31st among the Best Graduate Schools in Education, 50th nationally among the Best Graduate Schools in Clinical Psychology, 68th among the Best Graduate Physics Programs (US News 2009).

- Ranked 117th out of 258 national universities in the Washington Monthly's 2009 national university college rankings.

- The School of Education is placed 35th out of 278 schools. The School of Urban Affairs and Public Policy is rated 41st out of 269 schools and the Urban Management program is rated 10th, tied with Syracuse University (U.S. News graduate rankings for 2009).

- The engineering program was ranked 10th in the nation by The Princeton Review (2006).

- 8th in the NRC Ranking of Top Chemical Engineering Doctoral Programs in the US (1995).
