The Webometrics Ranking is based on indicators that takes into account both the volume of the Web contents and the visibility and impact of this web publications, which is quite different from other international league tables such as THE-QS and ARWU.

THE-QS ranking is based on factors such as quality of research, research training, peer and recruiter reviews, students and faculty score.

ARWU ranked institutions by their academic or research performance based on internationally comparable third-party data.

Does it mean that nigeria dont have a standard university?.

Anonymous - December 12, 2009 at 8:22 AM

it's a shame no Nigerian university could make the first 50!!!

Don't feel bad, Nigeria. The methodology used by this ranking isn't very meaningful, especially in the context of a developing country. I wouldn't take it too seriously. It's not really trying to measure whether people actually learn things at these universities, just how much impact their web presences have.

Are they trying to tell us that no university in Ghana made the top 50?. How was this ranking based on anyway. While on other sites a university in Ghana is ranked 20th.

It would be difficult to rank Nigerian Universities appropriately especially that there is so much industrial unrest (students and workers)in the Universities and the University calendar year is no longer definite. Opportunity for employment for products of these Universities is one of the criteria for ranking but without statistics for this and with the prevalence of the other problems ranking is difficult. We can only hope for improvement so that these institutions can take their normal place within the world academia.
