Furman University is the highest ranked liberal arts college in the state (placed 37th nationally), according to the US News & World Report 2009. It is ranked 9th among the top 10 most socially conservative schools in The Princeton Review's "Best 368 Colleges: 2009 Edition. It is also placed 15th in the Washington Monthly's Top US Liberal Arts Colleges Rankings. Furman ranked 62nd in Forbes.com 'Best Colleges' list.

Wofford College is placed 60th nationally. Forbes.com ranked Wofford as the best college or university in the Carolinas at No. 62 in its national ranking of 569 institutions. In 2009 U.S. News ranking, Wofford is placed 9th among liberal arts colleges on “schools to watch” list, and rated in the top quartile of best liberal arts colleges.

In addition Wofford is included in the “Insider’s Guide to the Colleges”, “Fiske Guide to Colleges”, and Princeton Review’s “The Best 368 Colleges”.

A number of South Carolina colleges made the list of “America’s Best Colleges” by Forbes.com, published in 2008. They were Wofford (62nd), Converse (147th), Furman University (154th), Presbyterian (190th), and College of Charleston (421st).
