According to the U.S. News & World Report Top Art School Rankings, Rhode Island School of Design is ranked 1st nationally for its Masters of Fine Arts Program, followed by Yale (2nd) and School of the Art Institute of Chicago (3rd). Another three leading Arts institutions are ranked equal fourth in the league table: Cranbrook Academy, Maryland Institute, and Virginia Commonwealth University.

The Yale School of Art is a professional art school that only grants the Masters of Fine Arts degrees to students who have completed their studies in graphic design, painting/printmaking, photography, or sculpture.

The School of the Art Institute of Chicago is one of the best fine arts colleges in the US, located in Chicago, Illinois. It offers an intense two-year MFA graduate program in Studio Arts, M.F.A. in Writing, and M.F.A. in New Arts Journalism.

Cranbrook Academy of Art is a Top 4 Art Academy in the country. The 2009 edition of “America’s Best Graduate Schools” published by US News and World Report placed the Academy 4th overall among the 220 Master of Fine Arts programs across the US. Cranbrook’s departments are all ranked in the top 10 in the “specialties” rankings such as: Ceramics, Fiber, Graphic Design (2D Design), Industrial Design (3D Design), Metals/Jewelry (Metalsmithing), Painting, Photography, Printmaking (Print Media) and Sculpture.

Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) Master of Fine Arts programs are ranked among the top 4 in the nation. It is also ranked 4th in painting/ drawing, 6th in graphic design, 7th in sculpture, 12th in multimedia/visual communications, and 15th in photography in the specialty rankings.

Virginia Commonwealth University is ranked 4th overall and 1st among public university school of arts and design in the country by U.S. News & World Report. It is also rated 1st in Sculpture, 4th in Graphic Design, 8th in Painting, 9th in Multimedia/Visual Communications, 12th in Ceramics, 17th in Printmaking, and 5th in Glass.
