The University of Cambridge was ranked 1st in the UK and ahead of Oxford (2nd), according to the Guardian University Guide 2016.

The University of St Andrews was ranked the 3rd best university in the UK and top in Scotland. It is the only Scottish University in the top fifteen.

The University of Surrey was ranked 4th in the Guardian University Guide 2016. In addition, Surrey was ranked in the top 10 for the following subjects: Hospitality, Event Management and Tourism (1st), Accounting and Finance (2nd), Electronic and Electrical Engineering (2nd), Drama and Dance (3rd), Sociology (3rd), Economics (4th), Music (4th), Psychology (5th), Mathematics (6th), Biosciences (7th), Business, Management and Marketing (7th), Civil Engineering (7th), Computer Science and Information Systems (8th).

Lancaster University has maintained its ranking of 10th out of 119 British universities, according to the 2016 Guardian league tables. In the subject tables, Physics is ranked 2nd only to Oxford. Other top 10 subjects are Accounting and Finance, Art, Biosciences, Drama and Dance, Chemical Engineering, History, Media and Film Studies and Social Work.
