Princeton University was ranked 1st in the world for Mathematics, according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2013, followed by Harvard University in 2nd place and the University of California, Berkeley in 3rd place. In total, there were four European institution ranked in the global top 10 for the subject: two from the UK and two from France.

The University of Cambridge was the highest ranked UK institution for maths (ranked No. 1 in the UK and No. 4 in the world), ahead of the University of Oxford (No. 2 in the UK and No. 7 in the world).
