The top ranked Australian universities for engineering studies include University of Sydney, University of New South Wales, University of Melbourne, University of Queensland, among others.

The University of Sydney was ranked 3rd in the list of Australia's top engineering and computer science universities in the QS World University Rankings for 2011. The Faculty of Engineering and IT at the University of Sydney was named by Shanghai Jiao Tong in its list of Top 100 world universities in Engineering/Technology and Computer Sciences in 2010. In the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2010, the University of Sydney was rated in the Top 50 Universities for Engineering and Technology as well as in the list of the Top 200 World Universities.

The Faculty of Engineering at the University of New South Wales is Australia's top ranking faculty of Engineering and consistently scores highly in a range of international and national rankings. The Faculty of Engineering was ranked No. 1 in Australia Times Higher Education (QS 2008) and the Melbourne Institute of Advanced Studies and 27th in the world (THES-QS 2008). It also has the leading Photovoltaic and Solar Energy Research Centre in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Melbourne School of Engineering (MSE) has topped the Engineering and Technology subject rankings against other institutions in Australia in the QS World University Rankings 2011. It was ranked No 1 in Australia and placed within the top 20 globally in the five categories of: chemical, civil and structural, computer science and information systems, electrical and electronic and mechanical, aeronautical and manufacturing.

The University of Queensland has been placed in the top global tier of universities in the first ever QS World University Rankings® for technical subjects in 2011. It was listed in the top 50 in the world for chemical engineering (world rank 29th), civil and structural engineering (world rank =34th).
