Following are the top ranking regional universities according to the publisher of U.S.News and World Report (2011):
Tennessee Technological University - Tennessee Tech is one of the Top 10 “Public Regional Universities” in the South. States included in the region are Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas. TTU’s ranking indicates that 82 % of its faculty members are full-time. About 37 % of its classes have fewer than 20 students, and the student-to-faculty ratio is 21:1. 53 % of TTU entering freshmen are classified in the top 25 percent of their high school class.
James Madison University - It is the No. 1 public regional university in the South as ranked by “U.S. News & World Report’s” 2011 edition of “Best Colleges” guidebook. JMU's rankings indicate that it has 92 percent average freshman retention rate, 81 percent average graduation rate, 16/1 student/faculty ratio and 86 percent of faculty who are full time. JMU’s freshman retention and graduation rates are both among the highest for schools in the complete “U.S. News” rankings report.
Winthrop University - The University retained its ranking as one of the South’s top 10 public universities that convey master’s degrees. Winthrop is placed 8th among its regional peer institutions that grant bachelor and master’s degrees. This is the 19th time the Rock Hill campus has received a mention in the prestigious newsmagazine, whose rankings include more than 1,400 accredited four-year schools nationwide.
California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) - It is rated as the fourth best public regional university in the western United States. The West region includes 13 states from Texas to California to Washington and includes Alaska and Hawaii. It is the third year in a row that CSULB has been rated the No. 4 spot. CSULB is also recognized by the publication in one of its other ranking categories: “racial diversity.” The Long Beach campus is ranked 5th among all regional universities in the west with a 0.69 diversity index score.
Dakota State University - It is the highest ranked public regional college in the Midwest. This is the fifth consecutive year that Dakota State has achieved the top position. Dakota State is ranked No. 1 in the Top Public Regional Colleges in the Midwest region category.
