Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) is a public, residential, liberal arts college located in North Adams, Massachusetts, USA. The College was founded in 1894 as North Adams Normal School. In 1932, it became State Teachers College at North Adams. In 1960, the name changed to North Adams State College and, later in 1997, to Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.
Graduate programs offered include a Master's in Education, Leadership Academy for school administrators and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS). The Masters of Education is offered with concentration areas in administration (school principal or supervisor/director, superintendent/assistant superintendent), special education, reading, instruction, curriculum, instructional technology, and other areas. The Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Educational Leadership is a post-master's level certificate for professionals interested in a career as principal, superintendent, or other leadership roles in education. The program is designed for both full-time and part-time study.
The College also offers noncredit and credit professional development programs for K-12 teachers and other professionals.
Designated in 1997 as "the public liberal arts college of Massachusetts," it is one of only 25 so-designated institutions in the country and a member of COPLAC, the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges.
MCLA is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). As a member of the Massachusetts Public Higher Education System, MCLA's admissions standards are determined by the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education.
