According to the Guardian University Guide 2014, Cambridge is ranked No. 1 among the top universities in the UK, ahead of Oxford (2nd), and London School of Economics (3rd).

The University of Surrey is ranked 8th in the Guardian newspaper's 2014 league table. Last year, the Guardian's Guide placed Surrey at 12th and in 2011 it was 19th position in the table.

Leicester is rated 13th out of 119 institutions, a rise of six places on last year's position. It is the top-ranked University in the East Midlands, and one of only two from the region to appear in the top 20.

Heriot-Watt University moved up two places from 20th to 18th this year, and is now rated as the 2nd best university in Scotland, ahead of the University of Edinburgh (ranked 19th nationally).

The University of Kent is now in the top 20 of UK universities, according to the Guardian University Guide 2014, a rise of two places from last year's position. Kent is also ranked highly in the Complete University Guide 2014 (rated 28th out of 124 UK institutions).
