The University of Hong Kong (HKU) is the top ranked university in Hong Kong, ranked 34th in the world according to the 2011-2012 Times Higher Education World University Rankings. Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is ranked 2nd in HK and 62nd in the world, followed by Chinese University of Hong Kong (151st internationally). A total of 6 Hong Kong institutions ranked in the global top 300.

University of Hong Kong is also ranked No.1 in Asia and 22nd in the world (up from 23rd in previous ranking) in the QS World University Rankings 2011/12. The rankings place importance on research, teaching, graduates employability and internationalisation respectively.

City University of Hong Kong (CityU) is ranked among the global top 200 institutions (at 193rd) in THE World Rankings 2011-2012. In addition, the University has maintained its position as the 15th top university in Asia in the 2011 Asian University Rankings published by Quacquarelli Symonds in May 2011.

HKUST is also ranked highly in other international league tables. It is ranked as the best university in Asia according to QS Asian University Rankings 2011. QS ranks Asia's top 200 universities based on relevant criteria including: academic peer review (30%), recruiter review (10%), student / faculty ratio (20%), papers per faculty (15%), citations per paper (15%), international faculty review (2.5%), international student review (2.5%), student exchange inbound (2.5%) and student exchange outbound (2.5%).
