City University of Hong Kong offers the following two types of research degree programmes: Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master of Philosophy (MPhil). The programme structure of PhD consists of both coursework and independent research studies sculminating in the submission of a thesis.

The normal duration of study for the full-time PhD programs is three years if a relevant research master's degree is obtained prior to admission, or four years with a first degree.
