Peking University is the top ranked university in mainland China (rated 13th in Asia) in the QS Asian University Rankings 2011, ahead of Tsinghua University (16th in Asia) and Fudan University (21st regionally).

Other mainland Chinese universities make it to the top 40 include University of Science and Technology of China (24th), Zhejiang University (27th), Nanjing University (29th), and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (33rd).

In the subject rankings of Arts and Humanities, Peking University is the best ranked university in mainland China (3rd regionally), ahead of Fudan University (7th) and Tsinghua University (10th).

In the subject of IT & Engineering, Tsinghua University is rated 2nd regionally, while Shanghai Jiao Tong University is in 9th position, and Peking University in 11th position.

In the subject of Social Sciences, Peking University is in the top 3 position in Asia, with Fudan University in 7th place and Tsinghua University in 8th place. Peking University is also the top ranked university in mainland China for Life Sciences and Medicine (rated 4th), ahead of Tsinghua University (9th).

In the subject of Natural Sciences, five universities in mainland China made it to the top 20 list: Peking University (3rd), Tsinghua University (5th), Fudan University (12th), University of Science and Technology of China (13th), Nanjing University (16th).
