Established in 1982, the University of Botswana (UB) is the first institution of higher education in Botswana.

The University has the Faculties of Business, Education, Engineering and Technology, Humanities, Science and Social Sciences. Programmes are taught from Certificate, Diploma, Bachelor's degrees through to Masters and Doctoral degrees in a number of disciplines in these faculties. Academic programmes offered include: Bachelor of Accountancy, Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Education, Bachelor of Nursing Science, Bachelor of Design, Bachelor of Engineering, Bachelor of Library and Information Studies, etc.

The Faculty of Education is one of the oldest faculties in the University of Botswana. It offers both undergraduate and graduate programme, including doctoral degrees. The Faculty has established a strong research tradition which is evidenced by the excellent research and publications record of its academic staff.

The Faculty of Science was started as a local Unit of School of Science of the then University of Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland in 1971.

The School of Nursing is a designated WHO collaborating centre for Nursing and Midwifery excellence Anglophone Africa in 1990.
