- It is ranked among the top American research universities, according to the Lombardi Program on Measuring University Performance. The study compares American private and public universities that spend more than $20 million annually in federal research funds.
- Among public institutions, VCU is placed in the top 100 on eight of the nine measures. Among both public and private institutions, VCU ranks in the top 101 on four of the nine measures.
- The university ranks in the top 100 public universities in total research expenditures, federally funded research, endowment assets, annual giving, National Academies members, faculty awards and doctorates granted.
University of California, San Diego
- The University has been named among the top 25 research universities in the nation by The Center for Measuring University Performance (CMUP) in its annual “Top American Research Universities” publication.
- Other University of California system schools listed among the top 25 research universities in the nation by The Center for Measuring University Performance include UC Berkeley, UCLA and UC San Francisco.
North Carolina State University
- Rated 27th among public American Research Universities and 10th among American Public Research Universities without medical schools (CMUP 2008).
- Rated 7th in Industry Research Funding among universities without medical schools, and 9th in Total Research Expenditures Among Public Universities Without Medical Schools (National Science Foundation 2008).
University of California, Riverside
- In the CMUP 2007 Annual Report of the Top American Research Universities, UCR is ranked 87th among public universities and 130th overall in faculty awards; 37th among public universities and 64th overall in postdoctoral appointees; 66th among public universities and 97th overall in doctorates awarded; 78th among public universities and 113th overall in total research.
The University at Buffalo
- It is ranked among the top 26-50 public and private research universities in the country, according to "The Top American Research Universities", the annual report charting the comparative performance of research institutions by a University of Florida research center.
- UB scored in the 26-50 range on three of the nine measures of performance: total research expenditures, with a national rank of 50th; faculty awards, with a national rank of 39th, and number of doctorates awarded, with a national rank of 40th.
