Oxford is one of the leading centres of geological research in Britain, with a score of 3.2 in the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) research assessment exercise.

The Department of Geology at Leicester is placed 4th in the National Guardian University Subject League Tables (12th May 2009) and 10th in The Times 2010. For the third year in a row the Geology Department was rated by its students as the best of the UK's departments offering full-time geology degrees (National Student Survey 2009).

Cambridge is ranked first for geology in the UK, followed by Oxford in second place and St Andrews in third place.
