The University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) is classified by the Carnegie Foundation for Advancement of Education as a Comprehensive Doctoral Research University with medical and/or veterinary medicine. It is one of eight institutions within the Nevada System of Higher Education, and is located in the city of Reno in northwestern Nevada.

The University is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and the U.S. Department of Education. It is also a member of many national professional associations including the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities.

Rankings:

- In the 2011 rankings of “best national universities”, the University is ranked as a first tier school at 191st. In addition, the University of Nevada, Reno made the “least debt” list at 22nd in “Most Debt/Least Debt” rankings.

- The University of Nevada, Reno is ranked 21st among the top volunteer-producing colleges and universities in the medium-size schools category (Peace Corps’ 2011 rankings).

- For the third year in a row, The Princeton Review has recognized the excellence of the University of Nevada, Reno College of Business in its Best Business Schools guidebook (2011).

- The University has achieved outstanding performance in the annual rankings of the best graduate programs by U.S. News and World Report (2011). The College of Engineering and School of Medicine are ranked among the best “schools”. Twelve additional graduate programs are ranked, with five placing in the top 100 of their field. The University also achieved top-225 rankings in the categories of biological sciences, chemistry, mechanical engineering, physics, psychology, part-time MBA and nursing programs.

- The part-time MBA program of the College of Business of the University of Nevada, Reno is ranked No. 21 in the United States by BusinessWeek. BusinessWeek started gathering information from part-time MBA programs with full accreditation from the AACSB, the highest level of accreditation in business education, in April 2009.

- In 2008, the University was ranked in the top 50 public research universities in the United States by The Center for Measuring University Performance, a national research center based at Arizona State University that tracks performance of more than 650 research universities.
