According to the QS World University Rankings 2011/12, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IITD) is the highest ranked institution in the country (rated 1st in India and 218th in the world), followed by Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (2nd in the nation and 225th in the world), and Indian Institute of Technology Madras (3rd in the nation and 281st in the world). Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay is also the best ranked Indian institution (rated 301-350th globally) in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2011-2012.

According to the 4icu.org ranking of Top Colleges and Universities in India for 2012, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay is rated 1st in the country, followed by Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur in 2nd place nationally and Indian Institute of Technology Madras in 3rd place nationally.

According to the Ranking Web of World Universities (Jan 2012), four Indian institutions are ranked in the global top 1000, with Indian Institute of Technology Madras rated 1st in the country and 454th in the world, ahead of Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (576th internationally), Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (646th internationally), and Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (846th internationally).
