San Diego State University (SDSU) is one of the top leading universities in the United States, and is part of the California State University system. It has been designated a "research university" with high research activity by the Carnegie Foundation.


- According to the U.S. News & World Report's "America's Best Graduate Schools 2011", SDSU is ranked among the nation's best graduate schools in Education (No. 71) and Chemistry (No. 140).

- 7th among Hispanic Studies programs nationwide for bachelor's degrees awarded to Hispanics according to Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education's "Top 100 Colleges for Hispanics", May 2009. It is rated 4th among English literature programs nationwide for bachelor's degrees awarded to Hispanics.

- 16th in the nation for bachelor’s degrees conferred to ethnic minorities (Diverse Issues in Higher Education, June 2009).

- SDSU received $25.8 million from the National Institutes of Health alone, ranking 48th in the nation (2009).

- SDSU has one of the best geography PhD programs. The Geography Joint Doctoral Program is ranked 7th in the US as reported by the “The Chronicle of Higher Education” in 2007.

- The joint-doctoral program in mathematics and science education was ranked 7th in the nation by the American Mathematical Society (October 2007).

- In 2007, the Department of Psychology is ranked 1st in California for NIH funding with $7.3 million in grants and contracts.

- The undergraduate entrepreneur program was listed in Fortune Magazine's top 25 list of "America's Best Colleges for Entrepreneurs" in 2007.
