The 2016 Academic Ranking of World Universities once again places Harvard University at No. 1 in the world, followed by Stanford University in 2nd place.

The University of California, Berkeley was placed 3rd overall, up one slot from its 2015 ranking, published by Shanghai Jiao Tong University. UC Berkeley follows Harvard and Stanford. Cambridge and MIT round out the top five.

The University of California, Los Angeles was placed 2nd among American public universities and 12th among all universities globally in the ARWU 2016 ranking. Besides UCLA, two University of California campuses placed in the top 20: Berkeley (third), the only U.S. public university ranked higher than UCLA; and San Diego (14th).

The University of Washington remained No. 15 in the 2016 Academic Ranking of World Universities. The UW again ranked 13th among U.S. universities and fourth among public institutions worldwide.
