According to the U.S. News and World Report rankings for 2009, the University of California-Berkeley English Ph.D. program was ranked as the nation's top graduate program for English, followed by Stanford University and Yale University (both tied for 2nd place).

The University of Texas at Austin was ranked 17th in the nation (tied with Rutgers State University-New Brunswick and University of Wisconsin-Madison). The English Department at UT Austin offers a Ph.D. program in a broad range of fields of study including: American Literature; Medieval Literary Studies; Renaissance Literature; Modern British Literature; Bibliography and Textual Studies; Digital Literacies and Literatures; and so on.

CUNY Ph.D. Program in English has received very high rankings in national surveys. It was ranked 22nd nationally by US News in 2009. In addition, the National Doctoral Program Survey (2000) placed CUNY program 1st among over 200 graduate English departments across the country; the survey was specifically designed to assess student perceptions of the effectiveness of their doctoral education.
