California Institute of Technology was ranked No. 1 among the world's top universities in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2013–2014. The rankings are based on an analysis of 400 research universities' performance in five areas: teaching, research, citations, industry income and international outlook.

Harvard University, Oxford University, Stanford University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology round out the top 5 schools in the 2013–2014 rankings. According to the survey, three UK institutions were ranked in the global top 10: University of Oxford (2nd), University of Cambridge (7th), and Imperial College London (10th).

In Canada, the highest ranked institution is the University of Toronto (U of T). It has been recognized as the top university in Canada and one of the top 20 in the world according to the 2013-14 Times Higher Education (THE) World University report. U of T was also ranked in the top 20 (at 17th) in the QS World University Rankings.
