Following are the top leading universities for Modern Languages:

University of Southampton
- In recognition of the high proportion of its staff carrying out "world-leading" research, Modern Languages was ranked in the top 2 UK Universities for European Studies in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) and it is placed among the top 3 in the Guardian's University Guide 2009 for undergraduate teaching quality, staff-student ratios and job prospects.
- Southampton also hosts the UK Subject Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies, part of the Higher Education Academy.

Durham University
- The School of Modern Languages and Cultures has achieved significant success in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. Its departments figure regularly in the top five in national league tables such as the Good University Guide and the Complete University Guide.

Newcastle University
- In the teaching quality assessment, the School of Modern Languages received an excellent rating of 22 out of 24 points. Modern Languages were one of five schools in the university selected for inspection in the external Institutional Audit of 2005.
- The School of Modern Languages encompasses study in the areas of: Applied East Asian Languages (AEAL); French Studies; German Studies; etc.

Royal Holloway, University of London
- In the RAE 2008, approximately half of the research produced within the School of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures was rated ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ in terms of ‘originality, significance and rigour’. German in particular was rated among the top 5 departments nationally.

Aston University
- The School of Languages & Social Sciences is one of the Top 10 Modern Languages departments in the UK, according to the Guardian Good University Guide 2010.
- Aston’s Modern Language courses are ranked 3rd in the UK (out of over 90 universities) for job prospects (Guardian 2009) and joint 1st for % of graduates employed (www.unistats.co.uk).
